Now, I’m not entirely sure I know how I discovered Shnabubula or even how to pronounce it, but I’ve gathered that Shnabubula is a jazz improv piano project from Samuel Ascher-Weiss, someone who is immensely more talented than myself in regards to piano playing, but that should go without saying. But, as is the case with me, I say anyway, whether it goes without or not! I believe I stumbled upon the free release Free Play on one of them file sharing sites that the government seems to be all up-in-arms about these days, but this here is proof that plenty of good comes from them. Because I went ahead and ended up paying for the album.
Anyway, this some kind of freestyle piano with some other goodness layered on top of it, and though I don’t know anything technical about this, “un-emphasized sixteenth notes as a reference” seems complicated. I do enjoy classical music, which I guess I ignorantly use as “awesome sexy piano,” though I’m not actually labelling this as “classical.” Of course it’s not – I mean the title of the track is “Electro Spunk.”
I’ve been listening to this for a couple weeks now, usually the whole album, but always this track at the very least. It’s something that’s become a mainstay for me while I write – usually about sports. It doesn’t give off a particular “sport” vibe but I find it incredibly calming when it’s background noise and intensely engaging when I feel like concentrating on it. Go ahead and give it a listen with the video here – just click play and watch. You can download the full release on Bandcamp here.
